The history of the name "Dordogne" would come from the Celtic " Du-unna ", which means "running water". Under the roman empire, the region was renamed " Duranius". In the middle ages, it successively became "Duranna", "Durdunia", "Dordoigne", and finally "Dordogne".

Discover the History and Prehistory of Perigord...

The Périgord Noir is one of the areas where human history began. The village "Les Eyzies", near the Vézère river, is commonly named "the capital of Prehistory", and the Lascaux caves with its unique paintings are famous all around the world.

Later the region was conquered by the Romans, then the French. The 100 year war and the religious wars tore down the country. Fortunately many villages have kept their medieval flavour.
